Why won't my xbox play games?

Just to clarify this is a first generation xbox, the black and green one. It plays DVDs fine and I assume it would play an audio CD fine, but when I put a game in it just does nothing. It stays on the dash bored and the eject button flashes a few times (like it should) but then nothing. Not even an error message. Any ideas?
