Why is my car misfiring and running on 2 - 3 cylinders?

i have a 96 saturn sl1 and it making a real bad putin noise kinda like maybe a misfire had the plugs and wires looked at they are fine and someone told my my coil or coil pack might be out thats why im runnin of less then 4 cylinders. also i was told i had gas in my oil we pulled out the dipstick and there was a distinct smell of gasoline in my oil what might that be
